Sip Squad: Alanna Gardner

IMG_2055.JPG

Alanna Gardner may be one of our favorite humans to grace this earth. Her passion for wellness is contagious, not to mention she inspires us while giving us jello legs at her Flywheel Sports and SLT classes. Naturally, she is a great fit for our Sip Squad and the perfect person to lend advice on pushing through the challenges that January can present. Check out her pro-tips in our interview with Alanna below.

Sip-N-Glo: Tell us a little about yourself, your business, and your thriving career in fitness.
Alanna Gardner: My name is Alanna Gardner and I’m a full-time wellness professional in Philadelphia. My business, Alanna Gardner, MFT LLC, is a combination of all things I’m passionate about doing to help people maintain or improve their quality of life. Whether that's through facilitating healthier mental, emotional, or relational well-being through my work as a Therapist with Philadelphia MFT or empowering people to change their relationship with their body through fitness as an Instructor at Flywheel Sports and SLT (Strengthen-Lengthen-Tone); I’m an overall lover of wellness and feel emotional and physical health are two pillars of a person’s overall success.

SNG: January can be an intense month--setting resolutions, getting back into a routine, not to mention it feels like it’s always dark and cold. What are some of your pro tips staying focused on goals?                                                                                             AG: Accountability is HUGE for me during this time of year. Anyone who knows me knows I can’t stand Winter (it doesn’t agree with my spirit lol) but it’s such an amazing time of year to put goals into action because I’m not as distracted by social events. Utilizing this time means putting myself in a position where I have to be held accountable. Telling someone I’m coming to their class, scheduling a date with a friend, becoming an ambassador for an empowering retreat like The Positivity Charge: if I know you’re expecting me to show up and show out; that’s exactly what I’ll do.

SNG: Balance is huge for us. Do you have any suggestions for avoiding feeling overwhelmed and enveloped by the whole “new year, new you” vibe?                               AG: I lessen the pressure by not subscribing to resolutions or “starting fresh” in January. I believe anyone can start over at any time! It can be a lot of pressure to put so much into this “new year, new me” vibe so I scale back and get real about my goals and expectations. Understanding what I can do to get to a goal is a game changer. I dream big so as a result I break everything down to tiny actionable steps. “Little by little until a little becomes a lot” is what I try to live by when it comes to my goals and the goals of my clients so that it’s not as overwhelming or defeating.

SNG: Where do you seek out inspiration if you’re feeling unmotivated?                            AG: I get curious about how I can change what I’m doing. If I’m bored with my method of teaching, I explore ways to spice it up! I look to other professionals in my field to see how they go about doing things or tailor new techniques to make them uniquely me. Challenging myself to move out of my comfort zone by trying new activities gets the creative juices flowing as well.

SNG: Do you have any healthy habits that you incorporate into your daily routine that you find very useful?                                                                                                                    AG: Prayer and journaling are a must for me everyday. I find it so cathartic and restorative since I spend a majority of my time pouring myself into others and understanding their challenges. I need my own personal outlet to release all I’ve experienced throughout the day as well as a way to keep track of my wins while expressing gratitude for what I’m thankful for. It’s incredibly encouraging to look back on what I wrote/prayed for and see what has manifested since then.

SNG: What are you most looking forward to in 2018?
AG: I’m extremely excited to launch my website Alannagthemft.com! From collaborative projects, to features from other wellness pros, to being a resource for people to refer to when they need it; It's a home for everything I do within the wellness community, so stay tuned! I cannot wait to share what I have in store!

SNG: What’s your favorite Sip-N-Glo drink and why?
AG: I feel personally bullied by this question because it’s impossible to just have one!! There’s so much on the menu that I enjoy but if I had to choose a juice, a bottled protein and a smoothie it would be the Charcoal Lemon-Aid, Vanilla Chai Pump Up, and Goji Glo (my personal mix is half banana, half strawberry for a PBnJ flavor!)

2017 Wrap Up with Kristin

KL1700

2017, it's been a wild one. As we start to wrap up the year and settle into the holidays we look back on 2017 and reflect on the good, the bad, and even the ugly. We sat down Sip-N-Glo owner, Kristin Lubsen, to hear her reflections of 2017.

Sip-N-Glo What were your top 3 best moments of 2017?

KL: 1. Opening my third location, 1700 Sansom Street, in just under four years was really great. 3 stores in 3 years was never a goal but to see it happen organically was pretty incredible.  Thinking back on when I had just opened the first store, it was just a single space. When the Sansom Street store opened it, it opened as a branded company. To see that successful evolution was really amazing. I never imagined having the amount of staff I have now. Being able to employ that many people is really something special.

2. Getting engaged. I had no idea that it was coming and I was completely surprised. It was such a perfect reflection of our relationship together.

3. Going on a personal vacation without my laptop and not touching work while on the trip. I haven’t taken a vacation without my laptop since I opened the first store in 2013. It gave me the opportunity to reconnect with myself.

SNG: What was your biggest surprise in 2017?

KL: Balance between my personal and professional life has always been challenging. Through a number of events in 2017 I was able to create a much better balance that not only worked but one I feel really good about. Giving myself the space to disconnect from work has made me a much more effective business owner, friend, and partner.

SNG: What did 2017 teach you?

KL: I’ve learned to trust and give value to my inner voice. Sometimes it can be challenging to not second guess yourself or value others opinions over your own, 2017 gave me the opportunity to connect to my voice and my relationship with myself. Feeling solid in my own voice has reinvigorated how I lead and evolve my company.

I used to get really caught up in what everything “should” look like. I’ve learned to let go of the expectations and really be able to enjoy the present moment for exactly what it is. As a result, I’ve been able to give more flexibility and forgiveness when it all doesn’t go according to plan.

SNG: Best thing you ate, drank, and danced to in 2017?

KL: Locally, the sweet potato agnolotti braised oxtail and brown butter from Fri, Sat, Sunday. Internationally, my entire meal from Enoteca Ferrara Ristorante in Rome, Italy. I LOVED the sweet pea summer cocktail from Harp and Crown in Philly. As far as music goes there were so many great songs in 2017, I can't just pick one. So here are are a few: Bodak Yellow by, Cardi B., Thunder, by Imagine Dragons, and Humble, by Kendrick Lamar.

SNG: Looking into 2018, what are you most looking forward to in this upcoming year?

KL: Personally, I’m so excited to plan my wedding with my fiance. It is so cool to think that we have the opportunity to have a giant celebration of our love with the people we care about the most. I love to create, and I’m excited to build an event with that creativity, using a lot of personalization, bright colors, and glitter!

Professionally, I see so much opportunity to continue to grow and expand the company and connect with our community. When I created Sip-N-Glo almost 5 years ago I didn’t have a set plan, but now I feel so solid in what we are capable of doing.

SNG: Any goals or resolutions?

KL: I’m looking forward to continuing to develop and listen to my voice personally and professionally.  I love how Sip-N-Glo has been able to provide Philadelphia with products that taste good and are good for them. The goal is to always continue to evolve, update, and create the best products possible. We’ll continue to keep our finger on the pule of what’s new and available to incorporate it on our menus with some Sip-N-Glo flair.

SNG: What can we expect from Sip-N-Glo in 2018?

KL: To keep you on your toes! We have been crafting up new items as well as updating our current menu with new exciting ingredients and superfoods. I'm so excited to share what's being tested with our costumers! We are also concentrating on specific benefits of superfoods and produce (which is super fun to play with) and how we can provide those benefits to our customers via delicious beverage. Basically, keep an eye out because we're Glo-ing hard in 2018!

Sip Squad: Ryan Lewis

IMG_0122.jpg

Holiday season is upon us and while we're thrilled to spend time with loved ones, take an extra serving of pie (life is about balance!), and Glo bright in this festive season, the holidays can no doubt be challenging when it comes to managing our stress and maintaining the healthy habits we work hard on year round!  This month, we've asked SoulCycle instructor/legend, Ryan Lewis, to join our Sip Squad and give us his pro-tips on how he stays rooted during the holiday hustle.  Check our our interview with him below!

Sip-N-Glo: Tell us a little about yourself and your health & wellness journey.

Ryan Lewis: I am originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia, but spent several years going to school and living in New York City and one year in Chicago before making my way back home.

Fitness has always been a priority of mine, and indoor cycling has been the one workout that has persisted since I took my first cycling class almost 14 years ago. Health and wellness became a top priority of mine when I decided to make some life changes and started to live clean. Since then, I have left a corporate desk job for the opportunity to pursue a career of a lifetime teaching at SoulCycle. Since making this career switch, I have not taken my position for granted and have always led head and heart first to inspire others to live in a way that takes care of themselves in order to develop the capacity to take care of others.

SNG: Holidays are around the corner which is exciting BUT can also bring on the stress. What are some of your pro-tips for stress management and staying grounded during the holiday season?

RL: I am very fortunate in that a big responsibility within my role is to create a therapeutic space for the riders in my classes. It is witnessing their reception of this creation that I stay out of the darker themes that can be brought about during the holiday season. Admittedly, my holidays growing up were always a time for light and love; however, there’s that overwhelming list of to-do’s that can cloud the simple joy of the season.

I teach every class especially during the holiday season with intention. That intention is typically within the realm of keeping it simple. Too often we succumb to the pressure of showing up in the most perfect way for our loved ones this time of year (finding the perfect gift, etc.). Presently, however, I think we need to reevaluate the value of our time and simplify our gift giving to spending time with one another. We allow ourselves to get busier and busier as days go by, so this year I am trying to keep it simple and focused on quality time.

SNG: We’re all about balance (i.e pass the pie, please). How do you maintain healthy habits while the holiday hustle is going on?

RL: My fitness regimen is rather intense as I teach seventeen classes a week at SoulCycle and cross-train about 7 times a week at either CrossFit Rittenhouse or [solidcore]. Therefore, I am lucky enough to be a little shameless in how I enjoy the holidays. Though the holidays are a super busy time with events and such, I maintain my personal fitness as a priority when making plans. Whether that means I show up to a holiday party an hour or so late, then so be it. We have to take care of ourselves in this way because no one is going to do it for us.

Additionally, I thoroughly believe in the idea of vibe attracts your tribe, so maybe part of your holiday plans with those you are closest with involve some sort of physical activity. Hop into a SoulCycle class (bonus points if it is a holiday music theme ride!) and make time for each other following the class. Everyone will be in good spirits through the power of sweat, manifesting more holiday cheer!

SNG: On a day-to-day basis, what are your healthy habits that you find most useful?

RL: I am all about consistency. The mornings are the most pivotal time for me as I teach at 6:00AM Tuesday through Friday and early morning classes on Saturday and Sunday, too. Getting my day started calmly is always top priority. This typically means getting up at 4:00AM or 4:30AM to have some espresso and breakfast before heading out to the studio, but it is that lack of chaos in the morning that allows me to come into each day with a sense of clarity within my purpose.

Additionally, I keep my ear close to my stomach when it comes to understanding what my body needs for sustenance. I take really good care of myself in that regard in how I choose to satisfy my hunger. Ever since Sip-N-Glo has become our neighbor at the Rittenhouse Square studio, they have quickly become my go-to coming and going to the studio. It happens often where I stop by on my way to class to grab a smoothie or juice there and the entire thing is gone by the time I have walked that ONE BLOCK between the store and the studio. Self control is a practice.

SNG: What’s your favorite Sip-N-Glo drink and why?

RL: Goji Glo (with added hemp protein). Peanut butter is my favorite ingredient in a smoothie, and the Goji Glo does it right with the added goji berries to transform a simple peanut butter and banana smoothie into this dream concoction that tastes like a PB&J sandwich. I add the hemp protein to it for added sustenance to help me during those longer pushes and runs in class ;).
